How do you feel when you find out you are having your staff photograph taken?

Most of us can relate more to the second expression – however it makes you feel, there are a few things to remember that will help you look and feel your best.

The Photographer will Get You Through It

… and even hopefully enjoy it!  They will help you to relax and know how to help with things like these:

SMILE!  Don’t be scared to smile! Think of how you would feel if you just ran into a close friend on a nice sunny day at the beach.

YOUR ARMS  Don’t worry about your arms – most people find they suddenly feel like octopus’s when the camera is pointing at them and don’t know what to do with them.  The photographer is ‘armed’ (yes a pun) with ideas to help.

Before You Go To Have Your Photograph Taken, Think About These Things:

WHAT TO WEAR?!  Your company will guide you about any particular uniform or look (ie jacket/tie) they are after. However it is generally a good idea to take these things in with you if that is appropriate – and have a photograph taken with and without.

BIG YOURSELF UP  Remember this is your ‘work and professional look’ – not holiday snaps.  Something that is your smartest and best outfit for work.  What represents both you and your company in the best light?  The more comfortable and good about yourself you feel, the better – so take time on yourself before going to the shoot!

BLACK  Black can be extremely flattering but is not really a great colour for photographs – not all over anyway.  It can create a kind of ‘blob’ look as there is no distinction between shapes on you.  Splashes of colour are good (ie scarves, big necklaces, shirts). If you are black fanatic, try a dark shade of another colour instead. On the other hand – flesh tones can also look odd, ie you can look a bit naked for a work shoot?!

FLESH  Again – this is your work shoot so just be aware of too low a neckline etc.  Also, it is usually more flattering in photographs if you have your upper arms covered – top arms can look bigger than you’d like/you are in real life.  Of course if you want to look bulked out and muscly then go for it!

STRIPED OUT  Stripes, big polka dots, big patterns – these can all be distracting on a photograph.  The thing to remember is to not go too crazy with them  Stripes in particular can appear wavy on photos and make you feel a bit seasick to look at.  Simple is good.

HAIR  Comb your hair before you go in – if you have long hair you could consider having some images with your hair down and some with it up.

SHAVING  Best done first thing to make sure everything is nice and normal skin colour!

MAKE UP  Powder is good to take any shine off, other than that just wear what you usually wear and freshen up before the shoot.

Remember:

The biggest thing is to feel good and have some fun.  You aren’t in the most boring meeting in the world – you have ten minutes away from your desk to enjoy the experience.  Most people do to be honest!
